Remove wallpaper from plasterboard in 3 steps
If you want to remove wallpaper from plasterboard, follow these 3 steps and you will be fine.
- Make sure you have the right materials
Start by picking up the right materials. Don’t forget about a tarpaulin to protect the floor and any furniture nearby. But above all, remember a soaking agent, a sponge, water, putty knife, puncture roller and a screwdriver. And don’t forget to wear old or protective clothing when you remove wallpaper from drywall.
- Prepare the room
Get furniture off the walls and put them in another room, or put them aside. This prevents them from getting in the way or being damaged by flying wallpaper glue. Then put down the tarpaulin to protect your floor. And use the screwdriver to remove any wall sockets. Also don’t forget to turn off the power. Removing wallpaper from drywall involves a lot of water and you want to prevent this from causing a short circuit.
- Determine your method
1. Do you have strippable wallpaper?Then choose to remove the top layer of the wallpaper.Use your putty knife to loosen the corners and carefully cut off the wallpaper. Keep the putty knife as flat as possible and avoid damaging the plasterboard from which you will be removing wallpaper. Do the same with maintenance and if necessary use a damp cloth to loosen hard-to-remove pieces.
2. Are you unable to remove the wallpaper with a putty knife? Then use the standard method and wipe the wallpaper from the plasterboard. Mix a soaking agent with water and rub the wallpaper with a dipped cloth or sponge. Remove the wallpaper with a putty knife that you place as flat as possible on the wallpaper. Do you have waterproof wallpaper on the wall? Make holes in it first with a spiked roller, or cut openings with a sharp knife.
Note: are you going to work with a soaking agent and water? Then be careful. The water should not reach the paper of the drywall. For that reason, working with a steamer for removing wallpaper from drywall is also not recommended.
After removing wallpaper from plasterboard: restyling
If you have managed to remove wallpaper from your plasterboard, you can start the makeover. First repair damage that occurred during the removal of the wallpaper. For example, by filling holes and allowing them to dry thoroughly. Then choose a new wallpaper that you want to fix on the drywall and give your room a whole new look.
