Pay attention, there are a couple of things you need to look out for. How much wallpaper do you need? What gear do you need? What do you do with your old wallpaper?

That is why we give you five practical tips in this blog. As long as you follow these tips, you will not be faced with unpleasant surprises, and the result will be beautiful.

Tip 1. Calculate how much wallpaper you need

Nothing is more annoying than having to drive up and down to the hardware store in the middle of a job. That is why it is useful, before you buy your wallpaper, to take the time to calculate how much wallpaper you actually need. Are you just going to wallpaper a straight, blank wall? Then it is very easy to calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need.

First, measure the height and width of your wall. An average roll of wallpaper is 10 meters long and 53 centimeters wide. That means that you have to divide the width of the wall by 53 to determine how many strips you need. So if your wall is 8 meters wide, the sum would look like this: 800 / 53 = 15.09 = 16 lanes.

Then you look at the height of the wall to calculate how many lanes you can get from one roll. If your wall is 2 meters high, the sum would look like this: 10 / 2 = 5 lanes per roll. Finally, to calculate the total number of rolls needed, divide the number of jobs you need by the number of jobs you get from a roll. So in this case it is: 16 / 5 = 3.2 = 4 rolls.

Are you going to wallpaper a sloping wall? Or do you have wallpaper with a pattern? Then it gets more difficult. Fortunately, we previously wrote a blog about calculating wallpaper.

Tip 2. Get the right stuff

If you are going to wallpaper yourself, there are of course a number of things that you will need. The first and most important thing is, of course, wallpaper, but there are still some things that you need to get. For example, think of wallpaper glue, a bucket to hold the glue, and a sturdy whisk to mix the paste with.

In addition, it is useful to rent or buy a wallpaper table so that you can cut and glue your strips on it. Also make sure you have a level and sharp knife to cut straight, and a glue brush to apply the glue to the wall and roll.

Finally, you can purchase a step or stepladder if you can’t quite reach the ceiling, and get a pressure roller to fix the wallpaper nicely and evenly.

Tip 3. Remove your old wallpaper

If there is still old wallpaper on the wall, it is usually useful to remove it first. Especially if the wallpaper has a tangible texture or dark colors, it is better to remove it before you stick new wallpaper on your wall.

Steaming wallpaper

The easiest way to remove old wallpaper is to wet the wallpaper. Fortunately, this is very simple. All you need is a wallpaper steamer and a roller, this is all you need.

First, roughen up your wall by running the spike roller over it. Then simply hold the steamer against the wall for a few seconds to loosen the wallpaper. Then it is only a matter of removing the wallpaper from the wall.

Removing wallpaper from plasterboard

If the wall you want to wallpaper consists of plasterboard, it is not useful to wet it. You could damage the drywall in the process. It is then more convenient to simply cut off the wallpaper. Use a putty knife to loosen the wallpaper from the wall. Be careful not to damage the drywall.

If there are pieces of wallpaper that you cannot remove with your putty knife, you can try to soak them with warm water.

Tip 4. Wallpaper on an uneven wall

Especially if you use thin wallpaper, such as non-woven or paper wallpaper, it is essential that you work on a smooth surface. Wallpapering on an uneven wall can cause ugly spots. Fortunately, there are ways in which you can still wallpaper on an uneven wall.

Vinyl wallpaper: The best wallpaper for an uneven wall

First, you can use vinyl wallpaper. This is a particularly thick form of wallpaper, so small cracks, scratches, and dots are hardly noticeable. Please note that this is not a miracle cure, some spots will remain visible.

Leveling your wall

Do you have larger irregularities in your wall that vinyl wallpaper cannot cope with? Then you will have to level your wall. You can do this by repainting your entire wall, but often it can be simpler. With some filler and a putty knife you can get rid of most holes and tears, and with some coarse sandpaper you can remove most dots and glue residue with ease.

Tip 5. Brighten up your wallpaper with a wallpaper band

Do you want to add extra detail to your wall, but find a pattern too busy? Then choose a so-called wallpaper band. This is a band a few centimeters wide that you can stick over your wallpaper. This allows you to give your wall even more of your personal touch. For example, opt for a border with classic patterns, bright colors, or fun drawings.

Order the most beautiful photo wallpaper With these five tips you can no longer go wrong when you start wallpapering yourself.
