Pre-iron wallpaper: why do you need to apply pre-iron for wallpaper?

You just got the rolls of wall murals. All the equipment is ready and you’re about to start. We understand that you are tingling with impatience to see the wall murals on the wall. But is the wall ready? Applying primer wallpaper can make applying the wallpaper a lot easier. In this article, we’ll tell you more about using primer for wallpaper.

Why do you need wallpaper ironing?

Pre-iron wallpaper ensures that the wallpaper glue does not pull into the substrate too quickly. When the wall has a strong suction effect, the wallpaper glue will pull faster into the substrate. This can make the wallpaper more difficult to adhere. Without priming, the wallpaper can attach itself to the wall. The result is that the wallpaper sinks or shrinks. The extremely absorbent force of the wall ensures that the wallpaper can no longer be moved. This makes it more difficult to correct a small mistake while wallpapering.

Check if you need pre-iron wallpaper

Pre-ironing for wallpaper is not always necessary. It depends on the adhesion or suction of the wall. Not sure if your wallpaper needs ironing? Then run the wallpaper test. All you need is a wet sponge. Iron the wet sponge over the wall. Is the water sucked up directly by the wall? This creates a dark spot on the wall. Not to worry! You won’t see this spot anymore after the wallpaper is installed. However, this is a sign that priming wallpaper is needed. The substrate is extremely absorbent. Does it take a long time for a spot to appear or can’t you see anything on the wall? Then you only have to sand the wall slightly before you can start with wallpaper.

Painting wallpaper new construction: no wallpaper test required

Do you wallpaper the walls of a new home? Then you can save yourself the wallpaper test. Pre-iron wallpaper is almost always necessary for new buildings. The walls of a newly built house have an extremely absorbent effect, because they are still unfinished. Even if the walls have just been plastered, it is not a luxury to use a primer.

How do you apply primer?

Primer for wallpaper is easy to apply. Make sure the wall is both dry and clean. Then you can apply the primer to the wall with a roller or block brush. Work from bottom to top so that the wallpaper precoat cannot get on the floor. Then allow the entire wall to dry thoroughly before starting to wallpaper. This will take about a day. After applying the wallpaper primer, you can move on to the real thing: applying your wall murals.
