Which type of wallpaper is best to choose?
Wallpaper comes in all shapes, sizes and thicknesses. But which wallpaper do you need for your next DIY job? That depends on several factors. We list the most commonly used types of wallpaper for you. So that in the future you immediately pick up the right wallpaper from the shelves in the hardware store (or ordered online at Wallart.com 😉).
Paper wallpaper
You actually have three types of paper wallpaper: simplex wallpaper, duplex wallpaper and rauhfaser wallpaper, of which duplex wallpaper is the best-known type. This wallpaper consists of two layers of paper and is available in many different colours, prints and structures. Because paper wallpaper is generally not very thick, it is important that your lower wall is smooth. Otherwise you will see imperfections through the wallpaper. The advantage of duplex wallpaper is that it is -in general- a lot cheaper than other types of wallpaper. So do you like to change your interior every (half) year? Then paper wallpaper is really ideal for you. Keep in mind that this type of wallpaper cannot be painted over or cleaned with a damp cloth.
Non-woven wallpaper
As far as we are concerned, the very best wallpaper, because we print our photo wallpaper on PVC-free non-woven wallpaper. In our opinion, one of the biggest advantages of non-woven wallpaper is that it is very easy to apply yourself. It does not shrink, hardly tears, and is removable. Just like glass fabric wallpaper, you coat the wall with wallpaper glue, instead of on the strips of wallpaper. As a result, you do not need a wallpaper table and you can enjoy the wallpaper on your wall much faster. If the wallpaper is not completely straight right away, you can easily correct the non-woven wallpaper. The non-woven wallpaper has a satin smooth finish for excellent color brilliance – a matte appearance – and scratch resistance. Thanks to these properties, you are guaranteed to enjoy your non-woven wallpaper indoors for a long time.
Vinyl wallpaper
Vinyl wallpaper consists of a bottom layer of paper with a water-repellent plastic top layer. The wallpaper is removable and water resistant. This makes it suitable for damp rooms and rooms where the wallpaper is touched a lot. Such as the kitchen, nursery, bathroom and along the stairs. Vinyl wallpaper is heavier than paper wallpaper. This effectively conceals any unevenness on the wall. At the same time, it is also more difficult to apply yourself. And because of the weight of the wallpaper you need a special glue. Another disadvantage of vinyl wallpaper is that bubbles can develop over time, because the wallpaper does not let the wall ‘breathe’.
Fiberglass Wallpaper
One of the newest types of wallpaper is fiberglass wallpaper. It is the most expensive type of wallpaper, but also the strongest. And just like non-woven wallpaper, it is easy to apply. This makes fiberglass wallpaper very suitable for bad walls. So if you have irregularities in the wall, or an older wall with some cracks in it, then you can strengthen the wall by using fiberglass. It makes damage invisible and the chance of further cracks a lot smaller. In addition to these advantages, fiberglass wallpaper can also withstand moisture, it does not shrink and is fire retardant. And it is easy to paint over with a nice color of paint that matches your interior.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing wallpaper. As long as you take into account the space and the surface where your new wallpaper will be placed. If you prefer to put a new wallpaper on the wall every quarter, then paper wallpaper is your best friend (provided it is not in a damp room). While fiberglass wallpaper is ideal for removing (starting) cracks and to protect and strengthen your walls.
