How much wallpaper needed: per square meter or the total surface area

How much wallpaper needed

Do you want to wallpaper a wall? Then the answer to the question ‘How much wallpaper do I need?’ is essential. Before you even start preparing your wall for wallpaper, you must order your favorite wallpaper. So you need to know how much wallpaper you need per square meter. And even better: per entire wall. In this article we will tell you how you can measure this and therefore how to find the answer to the question.

4 elements that determine how much wallpaper you need:

  1. The width of your wall
  2. The height of your wall
  3. The length of your wallpaper roll
  4. The width of your wallpaper roll

The formulas you can use to calculate the answer:

Length wallpaper roll / height wall = number of wallpaper strips that you remove from a wallpaper roll.

Wall width / number of whole wallpaper strips = the number of wallpaper rolls you need

How much wallpaper needed: to measure is to know

To determine how much wallpaper you need, you will first have to measure the total surface to be wallpapered. It is important to do this properly and in different places. A few tips that can help you with this:

  1. Measure the width of the wall in two places. First roll out your meter at the top of the wall from left to right and then do this again at the bottom. Why? Because no matter how well construction workers and plasterers do their best, a wall is not always completely straight. This way you can properly account for any differences.
  2. Also measure the height of the wall in two or three places. Depending on the total width of the wall. Measure carefully from top to bottom and write down the longest piece. Here too, there can be a difference of up to 1 to 2 centimeters between the highest and the least high piece.

The length times the width is the area of the wall you will be wallpapering.

measure the wall

Set the surface to be wallpapered against the size of a wallpaper roll

You have to compare the surface of the wall to be wallpapered with the dimensions of a roll of wallpaper. A standard roll of wallpaper is usually 54 centimeters wide and 10 meters long. Do you have a wall that is 2.5 meters high? Then you can calculate that you get 3 full jobs from one roll. Just to be sure, take an extra 5 centimeters into account, both above and below. That is 2.60 meters of wallpaper per lane. 10 meters (length wallpaper roll) divided by 2.60 meters (height wall) is 3.85.

You are not there yet, though, because you naturally want to know how many strips you need to cover the full width of your wall. For example, let’s take a wall 5 meters wide. Then you need 9.259 strips of wallpaper with 500 centimeters (wall width) divided by 54 centimeters (wallpaper width). Because you always get 3 whole lanes from a wallpaper roll of 10 meters, this means that you need 3 wallpaper rolls to be able to wallpaper your entire wall.

Different sizes of wallpaper strips

It is good to know that the dimensions of wallpaper rolls with Photo Wallpaper are different than in the above example. The standard width of a wallpaper strip with us is about 60 to 80 centimeters. But you can also opt for extra wide strips. At Wallart.com we also offer a wider track of 80 to 110 centimeters in addition to the standard option. And even an extra wide one from 110 to 140 centimeters. If you choose this, you will therefore need fewer wallpaper strips.

Our calculator calculates how many rolls of wallpaper you need

It is also useful that the calculator in our order form calculates how many rolls of wallpaper you need and of what size. In fact, we make custom photo wallpapers. All you need to do is measure the length and width of your wall, as described above, and enter it into the appropriate boxes. We then print the chosen wallpaper in one piece, so that patterns and images merge perfectly. We print an extra 5 centimeters as standard, because walls are not always straight.
